We’re so excited to have Michael Whitney and Nicole Aro joining us from the US as our international Experts-in-Residence for 2017.
Michael Whitney is best known as the Digital Fundraising Manager for Bernie Sanders’ campaign in 2016, having raised more $218 million online, revolutionising small dollar donations at a massive scale. Nicole Aro, Director of Digital Strategies at the AFL-CIO, specialises in organisation structures, change-management and the leadership, strategy and skills required to use digital to win.
Working with Michael and Nicole:
From March – August 2016, Michael and Nicole will be working with civil society organisations across Australia and New Zealand on digital strategies, change management, and effective fundraising and engagement programs. Work is already underway with GetUp, Oxfam, the CPSU, ACF and more organisations. Get in touch if you’d also like to work with them on these areas and more.
Michael and Nicole are simultaneously leading our new Digital Fundraising Fellowship kicking off in March, with Nicole as another expert presenter in the program.

Michael Whitney is an expert marketer, fundraiser, and campaigner. Michael was the Digital Fundraising Manager of Bernie Sanders’ U.S. presidential campaign, which raised more than $218 million USD online from 8 million contributions. Michael was named one of Rolling Stone’s “16 young Americans shaping the 2016 election.” He also led the digital fundraising strategies for Gabby Giffords’ gun violence prevention group Americans for Responsible Solutions, Zephyr Teachout’s campaign for U.S. Congress, and for Black Lives Matter leader DeRay Mckesson’s campaign for Mayor of Baltimore, and has previously worked with groups including Change.org, MoveOn.org, Amnesty International USA, and Howard Dean’s 2004 U.S. presidential campaign. Michael’s work in grassroots fundraising and mobilization has set new standards in how organisations can engage supporters and volunteers in support of their mission and values
