Passing the Message Stick | public briefings

Come along to a public briefing of the next phase of Passing The Message Stick, a groundbreaking message research project that has been designed to find the messages that build widespread support for transformative change on First Nations justice and self-determination.

  • Brisbane: August 16, 5.30pm - 7.30pm AEST. Register here.

  • Online: To be announced

In 2021, Passing the Message Stick released the foundational research that laid out first principles on how to build public support for self-determination and justice. The next phase builds on these foundations, to develop persuasive messages on key issues that are relevant in our current political context including truth-telling, treaty and representation, within the context of the referendum.
Just months out from the referendum, big conversations are happening across the nation about our colonial history, and our shared vision for our future – one that centres First Nations justice, truth telling and self determination.

As allies, we know that when it comes to First Nations justice, it’s First Nations communities who have the solutions and know what their communities need. It’s time for us to take their lead – from land rights to stopping black deaths in custody, fighting racism and inequality, keeping kids in community, as well as treaties, truth telling and representation.

That’s why we’ve spent the past 8 months researching the most persuasive messages to build widespread support for transformative policy change that centres First Nations-led expertise and solutions, including how to build public momentum and political will for more ambitious change both now and beyond the referendum.

Designed for advocates from across civil society, the briefing will include an overview of the moment we’re in, analysis of our research findings, as well practical recommendations and advice for your own messaging.

Passing The Message Stick has been led by a Steering Committee of pre-eminent First Nations advocates, and supported by GetUp and Australian Progress. Speakers at the briefing will vary in each city; you’ll hear from members of the Passing the Message Stick Steering Committee: Dr Jackie Huggins AM, Larissa Baldwin (CEO, GetUp) and Amelia Telford (First Nations Justice Director, Australian Progress).

Designed by and for First Nations people, the briefing will include an overview of the moment we’re in, analysis of our research findings, as well practical recommendations and advice for your own messaging.
