First Nations Advanced Media Workshop Training


Build your confidence and skills in telling your story, speaking up on issues that affect your community and learn how to engage with media such as radio, newspaper and television to shift the narrative and win campaigns for First Nations justice.

The First Nations Advanced Media Workshop Training is designed for First Nations advocates and community members from around the country, to build their skills and confidence in sharing their stories in the media and advocating for change for their communities. 

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

When: September 5-6, 10am - 3pm each day.

Where: South Brisbane - Meanjin. Some travel scholarships are available for participants who will need to travel to attend.

Who should come along? This face to face workshop is designed for and by First Nations advocates, activists, leaders and campaigners to use our strength in storytelling to learn more about using the media to campaign for change, in a supportive environment. We recommend participants have previously attended a two-hour introductory First Nations media training workshop, or already have some experience speaking with mainstream media, local and/or First Nations media.

What you’ll learn? You’ll learn the practical skills you need to tell your story, speak up on issues that impact your community, engage with journalists, use strong messages and do media interviews. In the workshop you will find out more about:

  • How the media operates and how to get your story into the news

  • How to prepare for and do a great media interview,

  • How to use the media to shift conversations and win change

When do applications close / when will I hear back? Applications close August 18th, but spots are limited and may be filled earlier than this, so please apply as soon as possible.We will get back to you within one week of receiving your application. We may have a quick phone call with you to get some more information about the sort of media you’d be interested in doing, and the skills you’re looking to develop.

about the TRAINERS

Sharnee Hegarty is a Gunggari Woman, with family connections to Mitchell and Cherbourg in Queensland. Sharnee has worked for decades advocating for change on issues like youth justice, equal access to health services and justice reform. She is currently the First Nations Senior Media Adviser for the Economic Media Centre.

Aliya Ahmad is a media campaigner with high-level experience leading and developing state and national campaigns across a diversity of issues including homelessness and social housing, racial justice and education. She is currently the Co-Director of the Economic Media Centre and was previously the Senior Media Advisor at the Victorian peak body for homelessness, a Campaigns Consultant at Essential and the Communications Director at Democracy in Colour.
