Monique Hurley

LAWYER, HUMAN RIGHTS LAW CENTRE (HRLC)

Monique Hurley joined the Human Rights Law Centre in November 2018 to work across a number of areas, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights and democratic freedoms. Monique previously worked at the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) from their Darwin and Katherine offices. In this role, she provided legal advice and representation on a wide range of civil law issues, including police complaints, coronial inquests and child protection matters. Monique also previously worked as a school lawyer at the Western Community Legal Centre (WEstjustice), as a Judge’s Associate at the Supreme Court of Victoria and as a litigation and dispute resolution lawyer at Clayton Utz. In 2017,  Monique completed a Master of Laws at Columbia University in New York. While overseas, Monique interned at The Bronx Defenders and was a research assistant to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions. Monique has also previously volunteered for a range of human rights and community organisations, including the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law, Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Mental Health Legal Centre, Homeless Persons’ Legal Clinic, Australian Red Cross and Villamanta Disability Rights Legal Service. Outside her work, Monique sits on the Steering Committee for Liberty Victoria’s Rights Advocacy Project and on the Board of a neighbourhood house, the Norlane Community Centre.
