Common Threads

In partnership with GetUp, Common Threads is back again in 2024 and will be held in Gimuy (Cairns) from 7-9 May.

This three-day summit is designed for, and by, First Nations people – to connect, yarn, share, learn, strategise and plan for action – through workshops, case studies, international guest speakers, campaign streams, social events and more.

For generations, our communities have fought tirelessly across many fronts. It’s because of the decades of protest, activism and advocacy led by our Elders and young people that huge momentum for change has been growing.

When we reflect on the past and how hard we’ve fought, whilst looking at how far yet we have to go, we must set sights on the aspirations of our communities and shift the goal posts of what’s possible. No matter how hard we fall, we get back up and the fight continues - for land back, treaties and justice.

It’s time to come together, across our movements and campaigns, and build power together, now and into the future.

Common Threads is a project of Passing the Message Stick, led by a steering committee of Dr Jackie Huggins AM, Larissa Baldwin-Roberts and Millie Telford.

If you’re a First Nations campaigner, community organiser, communicator, grassroots activist, advocate or changemaker, apply now to attend Common Threads.

Applications for Common Threads are now closed.

DATE AND TIME

Common Threads will be held over three full days in Cairns on 7-9 May.

COST AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Ticket costs are based on the size of your organisation and/or capacity to pay. We also have a number of full and partial scholarships available for grassroots activists and those leading unwaged community work or needing support for significant travel and accommodation costs to get to Gimuy (Cairns).

This means that larger organisations pay what represents the true cost of attending, small organisations contribute a lesser amount and scholarship holders are subsidised by philanthropic support and partner organisations.

If your application is successful, tickets will be available as follows:

  • Large Organisation Ticket ($475+GST)

  • Small Organisation Ticket ($275+GST)

  • Individual ($120+GST)

  • Free Admission - For grassroots activists, those leading unwaged community work, and anyone for which cost is a barrier to attend.
